How Risky is Ultrasound During Pregnancy?

Kathmandu - During pregnancy, various tests are conducted to assess the health status of both the mother and the baby and to identify any potential risks. To evaluate whether the baby is developing properly, doctors recommend periodic ultrasounds. However, some people fear that undergoing an ultrasound might affect the baby in the womb.

In this context, Vishnu Sigdel, a radiologist at Nepal International Health Services (NIHS), has stated that ultrasounds during pregnancy do not harm the baby or the mother. He explained, "We can perform ultrasounds as many times as needed—10 to 15 times, even. It does not make a difference. The concern about whether ultrasounds might emit radiation similar to X-rays or affect the baby in the womb is common, and I have seen such fears in some patients. But repeated ultrasounds do not cause any harm."

He noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that up to three ultrasounds are permissible during pregnancy, and in Nepal, up to four ultrasounds are typically conducted throughout the pregnancy. However, he clarified that ultrasounds can be performed as many times as needed based on the condition of both the mother and the baby.

"X-rays during pregnancy should be avoided as much as possible. However, in cases where the life of the mother or the baby is at risk due to a serious accident or a critical situation, X-rays may be necessary," Sigdel added.
