Dr. Akanand Singh is a dedicated Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon with over a decade of specialized training and experience in liver transplantation, hepatobiliary-pancreatic (HBP) surgery, and minimally invasive techniques. His medical journey has taken him across the globe, equipping him with the expertise to deliver world-class surgical care.
He began his medical education by earning a Bachelor in Clinical Medicine (MBBS) from Zhengzhou University, China, in 2009. During this time, he trained at the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, the world’s largest hospital with over 10,000 beds, where he gained invaluable clinical experience and exposure to a high volume of diverse medical cases.
Dr. Singh then pursued his MD and PhD in Hepatobiliary Surgery at Chongqing Medical University, China, completing a rigorous six-year program that laid the foundation for his surgical career. In 2016, he became the first Nepali to earn a PhD in Hepatobiliary Surgery—an achievement that reflects his commitment to advancing surgical science and innovation in Nepal. During his PhD, he received the Excellent International Student Award in 2015 from the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, in recognition of his academic excellence and contributions to hepatobiliary surgical research.
In 2018, he completed a Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery (FMAS) from the Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASI), further enhancing his expertise in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques. This training enabled him to offer patients less invasive options with faster recovery times.
Dr. Singh continued to advance his career by completing a two-year Fellowship in Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi—one of Asia’s leading centers for liver transplantation. There, he gained hands-on experience in over 100 liver transplants and complex hepatobiliary surgeries, honing his skills in living donor liver transplantation, deceased donor transplantation, and advanced HBP procedures.
In 2021, he achieved a major milestone by establishing the first liver transplantation program outside Nepal’s capital city at Chitwan Medical College (CMC) in Bharatpur. This initiative made life-saving liver transplant services accessible to patients in underserved regions and marked a transformative step in the country’s healthcare landscape.
In 2024, Dr. Singh served as a Visiting Surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA. Working alongside some of the world’s most renowned hepatobiliary and transplant surgeons, he deepened his expertise in advanced transplantation techniques and complex HBP surgeries—knowledge he now brings back to benefit patients and the medical community in Nepal.
One of the defining moments of his career was performing Nepal’s first-ever Combined Liver-Kidney Transplantation (CLKT) at KIST Medical College Teaching Hospital in Lalitpur. This groundbreaking achievement has been recognized by the Ministry of Health and Population, Government of Nepal, as a significant advancement in the country’s healthcare sector.
Dr. Singh was honored with the Young Investigator Award in 2020 by the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS), USA—one of the most prestigious accolades in the field of liver transplantation. In 2023, he received a Fellowship from The Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), USA, as the sole recipient from a low- or middle-income country. This fellowship highlights his contributions to surgical care in challenging environments and his commitment to excellence in hepatobiliary and transplant surgery.
He has also been awarded the Nepal Bidhya Bhushan “Ka”, the highest academic honor in Nepal, conferred by the President of Nepal, in recognition of his contributions to medical science and education.
Currently, Dr. Akanand Singh serves as an Associate Professor of Surgery at KIST Medical College and as a Consultant Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon at Grande International Hospital in Kathmandu. His work spans clinical practice, academic teaching, and research, with numerous publications in leading medical journals. He remains deeply committed to surgical innovation, improving patient outcomes, and mentoring the next generation of surgeons in Nepal and beyond.
