Transvaginal Ultrasound

At NIHS Clinic, we provide state-of-the-art Transvaginal Ultrasound Services for comprehensive and accurate evaluation of pelvic health. Transvaginal ultrasound is a specialized imaging procedure that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and surrounding structures. This minimally invasive procedure offers superior imaging quality, aiding in the precise diagnosis and management of gynecological conditions.

What is Transvaginal Ultrasound?

Transvaginal ultrasound, also known as endovaginal ultrasound, involves the insertion of a small, specially designed ultrasound probe into the vagina to obtain high-resolution images of internal pelvic structures. The procedure is primarily diagnostic, helping identify abnormalities such as cysts, fibroids, and other pelvic conditions, but can also guide certain therapeutic interventions.

Uses of Transvaginal Ultrasound at NIHS Clinic

Gynecological Evaluation

  • Diagnoses uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and polyps.
  • Detects endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
  • Assesses abnormal uterine bleeding and menstrual irregularities.

Early Pregnancy Assessment

  • Confirms pregnancy and estimates gestational age.
  • Evaluates early pregnancy complications, such as ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.
  • Monitors fetal heartbeat and early development.

Fertility Assessment

  • Monitors follicular development in women undergoing fertility treatments.
  • Evaluates uterine lining (endometrium) for embryo implantation readiness.

Pelvic Pain and Symptoms

  • Investigates causes of chronic pelvic pain, unexplained infertility, or other gynecological symptoms.

Preparation

Before the Procedure

  • Bladder Preparation: You may be asked to empty your bladder before the procedure to improve imaging clarity.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing as the procedure involves lying down on an examination table.

Medication:

  • No special medication or fasting is required. Your healthcare provider may advise specific preparation if necessary.

Procedure Details

Process

  1. Positioning: You will lie on your back with your feet in stirrups, similar to a pelvic examination.
  2. Insertion: A lubricated, covered ultrasound probe is gently inserted into the vagina.
  3. Imaging: The probe emits sound waves to produce real-time images of your pelvic organs on a monitor.
  4. Duration: The procedure typically lasts 15-30 minutes.

Comfort

  • Most patients experience minimal discomfort. The probe is small and designed to be as non-invasive as possible.
  • If you feel any pain, inform your provider immediately.

Safety and Risks

Safety

  • Transvaginal ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive procedure that uses no radiation.
  • It is considered safe during early pregnancy and for most women.

Risks

  • Minimal risks are associated with this procedure, but patients may experience slight discomfort during the insertion of the probe.

Post-Procedure

Recovery

  • No downtime is required. You can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.

Results

  • Images will be reviewed by your doctor, and findings will be discussed during a follow-up consultation.
  • In cases requiring further evaluation, additional tests or treatment may be recommended.
